Tussen de Faust uit 1859 en zijn tegenhanger uit 1869 is een deel van de geest verdampt: de spontaniteit van de gesproken dialoog en het melodrama, de flauwe humor van Dame Marthe, het cynisme van Méphistophélès. We zijn de charme vergeten van de eerste tenoren die ‘Salut, demeure chaste et pure’ zongen met het timbre dat typerend is voor de voix mixte van opéra-comique. Bovendien is door deze wijzigingen een groot aantal stukken in de vergetelheid geraakt. Als je deze eerste Faust ontdekt, krijg je een dieper inzicht in de Franse esthetiek van demi-caractère, zo specifiek voor Parijs in de jaren vijftig van de negentiende eeuw.
