Introducing the worlds first concertos for saxophone and orchestra by Paul Gilson (1865-1942). Including two premiere recordings, saxophonist Kurt Bertels hopes not only to make the Belgian composer Paul Gilsons works for saxophone and orchestra much better known but also to broaden the instruments standard repertoire with his CD Works for Saxophone and Orchestra by Paul Gilson. In collaboration with Flanders Symphony Orchestra, Bertels endeavours to present these works in a historically informed manner, with the intention of linking the instrument to the movement for historically informed performance. This CD is the artistic result of the doctoral research carried out by Kurt Bertels which focused on the context, performance practice and repertoire of the saxophone school that existed at the Royal Brussels Conservatory between 1867 and 1904 which led to the rediscovery of the autographs of Gilsons Premier Concerto and Recitatif et Serenade. The Brussels-born Paul Gilson composed two concertos for saxophone and orchestra the first ever to be composed in 1902; Gilson also reworked his Recitatif et Serenade for cello and orchestra into a version for tenor saxophone in 1906. Gilsons first saxophone concerto, on the other hand, was only rediscovered after a long search.

"Dertien jaar voor Debussy schreef Paul Gilson (1865-1942) het symfonische vierluik La mer, zo ongeveer het enige werk van hem dat we ten noorden van Brasschaat (enigszins) kennen. De productieve Belg heeft nog heel wat meer op zijn muzikale kerfstok, zoals een omvangrijk oeuvre voor harmonie- en fanfareorkest, want hij wilde de HaFaBra-muziek op een hoger peil brengen. Dat is gelukt: zijn landgenoten eren hem als ‘de vader van de Belgische blaasmuziek’. Hij legde zich toe op kleurrijke instrumentatie naar het voorbeeld van Russische componisten als Rimski-Korsakov, Cui en Glazoenov. In 1902 pionierde hij met twee soloconcerten voor de saxofoon. We horen de oorspronkelijke versies met symfonieorkest. Vooruitstrevend kun je zijn stijl niet noemen, maar meesterinstrumentator Gilson weet in deze dankbare, virtuoze en welluidende werken alle mogelijkheden van het instrument optimaal uit te buiten. De fluweelzachte Evette & Schaeffer-altsax uit 1898 van de behendige Kurt Bertels (tevens deskundig toelichter) kronkelt verleidelijk door de klanken van het Gentse Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen onder hun vorige chef Latham-Koenig. In het zoetgevooisde Récitatif et Sérénade uit 1906 (in deze versie een wereldpremière) laat een al even historische tenorsax zich horen. Aangename muziek en een prachtige showcase voor de saxofoon."
