Deze opname biedt de gelegenheid om kennis te maken met het werk van William Byrd ter gelegenheid van zijn vierhonderdste sterfdag. Deze sleutelfiguur van de Engelse Renaissance was een enigmatische persoonlijkheid: een katholiek zonder twijfels, tegelijkertijd een van de favorieten van de protestantse koningin, een ernstige, nogal melancholische figuur, tegelijkertijd vol scherpe humor, die zeer persoonlijke, ontroerende muziek schreef. Het hoogtepunt van de opname is zeker "Ye sacred Muses", een eerbetoon aan Thomas Tallis, Byrd's leraar, collega en vriend.
