Al ruim 15 jaar is dirigent en klavecinist Masaaki Suzuki bezig met de registratie van de complete ‘Cantates’ van Johann Sebastian Bach. De reeks, die hij in 1995 begon met zijn eigen Bach Collegium Japan, is inmiddels aan volume 47 toe. Natuurlijk is hij niet de eerste die met deze marathononderneming bezig is. Hij is wel de enige die Europese stemmen en Japanse musici met elkaar combineert. En dat geeft toch iedere keer een heel bijzonder resultaat. 

Het emotionele bereik van de cantates die Suzuki voor deze cd heeft samengesteld is groot, van de vreugdevolle vitaliteit van de adventscantate BWV 36 tot de meditaties over de dood en het afscheid van deze wereld in BWV 47. Deze cantate is een bijzonder uitstekend voorbeeld van Bachs grandioze vermogen om een tekst door middel van muziek te illustreren, en tegelijkertijd een zeer complexe compositie met een nauwkeurig uitgebalanceerde interactie tussen koor en orkest.
