De Academy of Ancient Music, Cambridge Händel Opera Company, Cambridge Early Music en Julian Perkins presenteren met trots de eerste professionele opname van John Eccles' Semele (ca. 1707), een opmerkelijke vroege zetting van William Congreve's grote Engelse libretto, beter bekend in een 1744 versie door G.F. Händel. De Academie voor Oude Muziek heeft zich tot taak gesteld de grote schatkamer van de barok en de klassieke muziek te onderzoeken, te ontsluiten en te bewaren. Eccles' Semele is de volgende stap op deze reis, hier uitgebracht op 2 CD's in luxe hardcover presentatie met een uitgebreid full-colour begeleidend boekje met geleerde essays, Stephen Fry's moderne hervertelling van het verhaal, autograaf manuscript illustraties van Eccles' partituur, de volledige libretto tekst en nog veel meer. Een fascinerend inzicht in hoe de opera zich in Engeland had kunnen ontwikkelen na de dood van Henry Purcell, als Händel niet in 1712 naar Londen was verhuisd.
