It is true that images have the power to keep a trace of the past. Gottfried von der Goltz and the Freiburger Barockorchestra prove, with this recording, that music, too, conceals the secret of the memory deep within. Though rarely played, much less recorded, Mozart's youth symphonies bear the reminiscence of the child the composer used to be, as well they include the seeds of his future masterpieces. The Freiburger Barockorchester fullfils, with this album, the portrait of the brilliant composer, whose influences lie in these symphonies and contredanses, as well as his musical tastes: from the G minor tonality that we hear in the Symphony K. 22 to the aria "Non piu andrai" that can be heard in the first Contredanse, the music of the young Mozart echos to the elder. Conducted by Gottfried von der Goltz, expert of the repertoire, the orchestra offers a genuine performance and interpretation, delivering the last piece of the Mozart puzzle.

"In 1763 vertrokken de Mozarts uit Salzburg voor een tournee door Europa. De reis zou ruim drie jaar duren. Vader Leopold en zijn twee wonderkinderen verbleven onder meer in Londen, Parijs en Den Haag. Tussen zijn achtste en zijn tiende componeerde Wolfgang daar zijn eerste vijf symfonieën. In 1764 kreeg hij een schetsboek om muzikale invallen te noteren. Volgens zijn zusje Nannerl lag hun vader ziek op bed en mochten zij hem niet storen en niet op het klavier spelen. Daarom begon Wolfgang maar aan een symfonie, meer worstelend met inkt en ganzenveer dan met muzikale ideeën. Hij zou zijn zusje op het hart hebben gedrukt: ‘Help me herinneren dat ik de hoorns wat te doen geef.’ Het werd zijn eersteling, K16. Daarna volgden er in rap tempo nog een paar. Het Freiburger Barockorchester laat op elk van deze vijf wonderbaarlijke proeven van bekwaamheid telkens een contradans volgen die Mozart in zijn laatste levensjaren heeft gecomponeerd. Het orkest heeft onder René Jacobs al veel affiniteit met Mozart gedemonstreerd. Die toont het opnieuw nu de concertmeester Gottfried von der Goltz de 22 musici vanaf de eerste lessenaar voorgaat in dit aantrekkelijke mengsel van mozartiaans rijp en groen."
