Cinq Rechants: O Scrum Convivium

Frieder Bernius en het Kammerchor Stuttgart bereiken hier een nieuw hoogtepunt in hun vertolkingskunst, want Messiaens Cinq rechants met hun ritmisch opvallende onomatopeeën vormen een enorme uitdaging. Aangezien de uiterst complexe ritmen, opgebouwd uit cellulaire bouwstenen, niet in traditionele schema's kunnen worden ingepast, veranderen de tijdssignaturen voortdurend. Melodisch put de componist uit traditionele amoureuze liederen uit de Andes en het middeleeuwse Tagelied, waarin een bewaker de geheime geliefden waarschuwt voor ontdekking. De produktie wordt aangevuld met Franse vocale muziek uit de 20e eeuw.

The opening of the second Rechant is suitably languid as are the glowing close harmonies of the third’s ‘Ma robe d’amour’, and there is commendable precision for the tumbling cries of ‘sarî’ that follow."
