Zowel de almachtige Lully als zijn opvolger Delalande slaagden er lange tijd in om Marc-Antoine Charpentier van een officiële hofpost in Versailles weg te houden. Zijn "Idylle en musique" Les Arts Florissans (1685) voldeed nog net aan de beperkende castbeperkingen van Lully's operamonopolie, temeer daar het kleine meesterwerk alleen werd opgevoerd in de privé-kring van zijn beschermvrouwe Marie de Lorraine, hertogin de Guise. Des te verbazingwekkender is het hoe de componist desondanks in deze miniatuur-opera een maximaal effect wist te bereiken. Lully en Delalande wisten natuurlijk precies welke gevaarlijke concurrenten zij systematisch onder de voet liepen.

But the other soloists also excel, the bass David Witczak's mastery of Discord's rapid patter deserving special praise."
