Als mediterraan, zelfs exotisch instrument uit Italië, was de mandoline tot het einde van de eeuw van de Verlichting zeer in trek in Frankrijk, wat ook wordt bevestigd door talrijke iconografische en muzikale bronnen. Het Ensemble Pizzicar Galante biedt hier een compilatie van de beste muziek die in Parijs werd gespeeld tijdens het echte "gouden tijdperk" van de mandoline.
