De in Verona geboren Stefano Bernardi was de eerste kapelmeester van de nieuw gebouwde kathedraal van Salzburg en was verantwoordelijk voor de invoering van de Italiaanse "stile nuovo", die bij hem vooral tot uiting komt in meerkoren en het stile concertato. Met het majestueuze Salzburg Requiem vestigen Voces Suaves en Concerto Scirocco voor het eerst de aandacht op deze belangrijke tijdgenoot van Monteverdi.
