Duel: Porpora and Handel In London

Met de oprichting van de Opera van Adel in 1733 groeide Händels zogenaamde Tweede Akademie uit tot een meer dan gevaarlijke concurrent, die er onder meer meteen in het begin in slaagde bijna de hele zangersstaf van Händels gezelschap af te troggelen. Vanaf het seizoen 1734/35 kon het concours ook bogen op de beroemde castrato "Farinelli". De geëngageerde componist was niemand minder dan Nicola Antonio Porpora (1686-1768), een van de belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van de Napolitaanse School. De concurrentie was ruïneus voor beide muziektheaters en leidde uiteindelijk tot het faillissement van beide operagezelschappen in 1737. Anderzijds was het ook enorm vruchtbaar voor de rivaliserende componisten. Händel en Porpora waren intelligent genoeg om van elkaar te leren en bleven nieuwe dingen uitproberen. Dit fascinerende album documenteert deze muzikale competitie tussen twee reuzen van de barokopera, hun wederzijdse invloed, maar ook de hoorbare verschillen tussen de twee.
