Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 4 - the Wood Nymph - Valse Triste

De Vierde is Sibelius' moeilijkste symfonie. Voor sommigen is het zijn meesterwerk. Toen de symfonie op 3 april 1911 in Helsinki in première ging, vergeleek een criticus het met Barkbröd - boomschors dat Finnen eten in tijden van hongersnood! Het is dan ook een Fin, de dirigent Santtu-Matias Rouvali, die zich bezighoudt met deze symfonie die onze gevoelens blootlegt. Met zijn Göteborg Symfonie Orkest vervolgt hij zijn cyclus van alle Sibelius symfonieën en voegt daar de beroemde Valse Triste en het symfonische gedicht De Bosnimf aan toe, geïnspireerd door Zweedse folklore.
