Van Southern gospel en country muziek tot blues en rockabilly, hij was de eerste rockgigant die putte uit Europees-Amerikaanse tradities, in tegenstelling tot tijdgenoten en vrienden als Elvis Presley of Jerry Lee Lewis, die hun invloeden voornamelijk uit het Afro-Amerikaanse repertoire haalden.
