Beethoven Missa Solemnis Op. 123

De Missa solemnis werd gecomponeerd tussen 1818 en 1823 als resultaat van intensief theologisch en muzikaal onderzoek in de bibliotheek van de opdrachtgever, aartshertog Rudolph van Habsburg. Beethoven beschouwde het als zijn meest ambitieuze werk. Met deze opname laat René Jacobs zien dat het ook zijn meest sublieme werk is: dat van een diepgelovig componist en voorvechter van de mensheid, zo zeker van zijn kunst dat hij een opus creëert dat de liturgische vorm overstijgt en muzikaal de universaliteit van de goddelijke transcendentie bevestigt.
