De vijf pianoconcerten van Beethoven vertellen op hun eigen manier een stuk van zijn leven. In het vorige deel van deze complete opname hebben Kristian Bezuidenhout, Pablo Heras-Casado en de leden van het Freiburger Barockorchester zich gewijd aan het begin en het einde van het verhaal (2e Pianoconcert, Beethovens Weense "springplank", en het 5e, eveneens het "Keizerconcert"). Nu gaat het om het meest persoonlijke, namelijk het 4e Pianoconcert, dat, overschaduwd door de dreiging van doofheid, de conventies van het genre doet exploderen - gelijk aan orkestwerken als Coriolan of de Ouverture tot de Wezens van Prometheus.
Kristian Bezuidenhout, sinds 2018 artistiek leider van het ensemble naast Gottfried von der Goltz, is een specialist van de fortepiano zoals men alleen maar kan dromen: Hij beheerst zijn instrument - hier de replica van een Weense Conrad Graf vleugel uit 1824 - met een soepel lopende superioriteit ...
