Violin Concerto/Symphony No.5

Na de mystieke concertouverture De Hebriden en de meesterlijke Reformatiesymfonie begon Mendelssohn aan het schrijven van zijn tweede vioolconcert. Na een lang rijpingsproces waarin hij de orkestratie verfijnde en de solopartij grondig herzag, ging het werk uiteindelijk in 1845 in Leipzig in première. Verschillende virtuozen, waaronder David en Joachim, werkten met de componist samen bij verschillende heropvoeringen om de vioolpartij vast te leggen, en lieten onderweg sporen na van hun speeltechniek - vingerzettingen, strijkingen en uitvoeringsinstructies - voor het nageslacht. Voor deze opname is dit kostbare erfgoed onderzocht op tot nu toe onontgonnen expressiemiddelen. Hier biedt Isabelle Faust, begeleid door het uitstekende Freiburgse barokorkest onder leiding van Pablo Heras-Casado, ons met haar frisse interpretatie een wonder van zuiverheid en poëzie dat Mendelssohns belofte inlost dat het "een concerto moet zijn dat engelen in de hemel verblijdt".
