Orfeo Ed Euridice

Het ensemble La Nuova Musica, dat gespecialiseerd is in de historische uitvoeringspraktijk, presenteert een nieuwe opname van Glucks "Orfeo ed Euridice" waarin countertenor-ster Iestyn Davies de titelrol zingt. Ooit door Gluck gecomponeerd om de "nobele eenvoud en stille grootsheid" van de oude Griekse cultuur in muziek om te zetten, verrukt de opera vandaag de dag het publiek met zijn directe en pretentieloze aantrekkingskracht, vooral tot uiting komend in de wereldberoemde aria "Che farò senza Euridice". De originele versie van de opera uit 1762 is hier te horen. La Nuova Musica en haar artistiek directeur David Bates behoren tot de meest opwindende jonge barokensembles van onze tijd. Dit is hun eerste opname voor het audiofiele label PENTATONE. Men kan deze opname gerust rekenen tot de meest verheugende gebeurtenis in de opname historie van dit werk.

 Orfeo ed Euridice

"Op plaat en cd heeft Glucks Orpheus zijn leed al vaak uit mogen zingen. La Nuova Musica onder leiding van David Bates zorgt ervoor dat we toch nog een keer gaan luisteren: deze nieuwe liveopname van Glucks Weense versie uit 1762 van Orfeo ed Euridice geeft een echte theatersfeer en het weldadige gevoel van groepswerk. Het hele werk past op een welgevulde cd: de opera ontrolt zich als in een enkele adem, met spanning, tederheid en menselijkheid. Countertenor Iestyn Davies zingt ongelooflijk mooi als Orfeo en is niet overdreven klagelijk: hij behoudt te allen tijde zijn betovering. Sophie Bevan en Rebecca Bottone zijn, in de recente traditie van de Britse zangschool, fraai afgewerkte stemmen met iets te weinig persoonlijke kleur, maar ze dragen als Euridice en Amore op alerte wijze bij aan het drama. Dat laatste is van groot belang. Dirigent Bates en zangeres Bottone lijken zich gelukkig te realiseren dat Amore de verpersoonlijking van Orfeo’s liefde is en geen huppelend cupidootje. Een ander slim effect: het langzaam wegvallen van de weerstand van de onderwereldgeesten tijdens Orfeo’s zang. Dit is een waardevolle nieuwe opname."
