Proving Up

Opera Omaha presenteert Missy Mazzoli’s opera Proving Up (2018) in zijn première-opname met het International Contemporary Ensemble en dirigent Christopher Rountree. Mazzoli, door Time Out New York gekroond tot ‘Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart’, is een van de meest opwindende jonge componisten van dit moment. Haar muziek is state-of-the-art, maakt vaak gebruik van elektronica, maar is tegelijkertijd vol nostalgie en melancholie. Mazzoli heeft veel lof gekregen voor haar operacomposities, waaronder Breaking the Waves (2016) en Song from the Uproar (2012). Voor Proving Up werkt ze samen met librettist Royce Vavrek. Proving Up is gebaseerd op een kort verhaal van Karen Russell en biedt een surrealistisch en verontrustend commentaar op de Amerikaanse droom aan de hand van het verhaal van een familie uit Nebraska aan het eind van de 19e eeuw. In opdracht van de Washington National Opera, het Miller Theatre aan Columbia University en Opera Omaha kreeg het stuk lovende kritieken en zal het de komende jaren in verschillende van de grootste Amerikaanse operahuizen worden gepresenteerd. De Washington Post noemde het “aangrijpend…krachtig…een echte opera van onze tijd”. Royce Vavrek keert terug naar PENTATONE na The House Without a Christmas Tree (2018, muziek van Ricky Ian Gordon). Missy Mazzoli, Opera Omaha, het International Contemporary Ensemble en Christopher Rountree maken allemaal hun PENTATONE-debuut.
