Beethoven: Hammerklavier Sonata Op. 106 & Eroica Variat

Na zijn veelgeprezen interpretatie van Messiaens Catalogue d'Oiseaux keert pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard terug naar PENTATONE met een opname van Beethovens Hammerklavier Sonate en Eroica Variaties. De Hammerklavier Sonate is een van de hoogtepunten van Beethovens oeuvre en voor een pianist misschien wel een van de hoogste bergen om te beklimmen. Voor Aimard is het een van de angstaanjagendste beproevingen in het leven van een artiest, maar wel een die even onweerstaanbaar als onoverkomelijk is

De schitterende Eroica-variaties zijn genoemd naar Beethovens iconoclastische Derde Symfonie en gebruiken de melodie die hij later zou gebruiken als het hoofdthema van de finale van de symfonie. Beethovens voorkeur voor deze melodie ligt voor de hand, want hij gebruikte ze ook in zijn balletmuziek voor De wezens van Prometheus, en in de zevende van zijn 12 Contredanses.
