De opera Het sluwe Vosje werd voor het eerst opgevoerd in 1924 en is, samen met Jenufa, een van de meest gespeelde toneelwerken van Leos Janácek, ja zelfs van de hele klassiek-moderne periode. Voor Sir Simon Rattle heeft dit werk, naast zijn onmiskenbare muzikale kwaliteit, ook een persoonlijke emotionele betekenis. Het was juist dit stuk dat in hem de wens wakker maakte om operadirigent te worden. Bovendien, zo bekent hij, is het nog steeds een van de werken die hem tot tranen toe kan bewegen. De opname van een eersteklas semi-geënsceneerde uitvoering wordt aangevuld met een niet minder overtuigende opname door het Sinfonietta uit de pen van de componist.
