Monteverdi’s seminal first opera tells the dramatic story from Ovid’s Metamorphoses of the descent of Orfeo (Georg Nigl) into the underworld to recover his beloved wife Euridice (Roberta Invernizzi), who has died from a snake bite. In a new production for La Scala, based on a painting by Titian and directed by Robert Wilson, the opera receives a powerful and inspiring performance from a fine cast, the Orchestra of Teatro alla Scala and Concerto Italiano under the much-admired Italian early music specialist, Rinaldo Alessandrini. Filmed in High Definition and recorded in true surround sound.

"Het komt niet vaak voor dat een vroegbarokke opera uitgevoerd wordt in La Scala. Zeker bij Monteverdi heb je meer aan de intieme sfeer van een klein theater. De in september 2009 opgenomen productie van Robert Wilson bewijst dat het wel degelijk kan. De beelden zijn gestileerd, soms heb je het gevoel naar film stills te kijken. Ik ben geen groot liefhebber van Wilson, maar zijn typische bewegingen en gebaren werken hier wonderwel. Het statische maar mooie bühnebeeld met weinig decors geeft alle ruimte aan de muziek. Met betoverende belichting wordt sfeer gecreëerd en de kostuums zijn prachtig. Rinaldo Alessandrini dirigeert gespierd, met nadruk op het dansante van de
muziek. Zijn tempi zijn voortvarend zonder gehaast te klinken. Georg Nigl is een mooie Orfeo. Nooit gedacht dat hij na Wozzeck nog zo veel lyriek in zijn stem zou hebben. Maar iedereen van de verder uitstekende cast verbleekt bij Sara Mingardo. Haar stem is warm en vol kleuren. Ook permitteert zij zich (bij Wilson meestal niet toegestane) gezichtsuitdrukkingen, waardoor alle aandacht naar haar gaat."
