Respighi: Roman Trilogy

Respighi's fascinatie voor de Eeuwige Stad, waar hij sinds 1913 woonde, komt nergens beter tot uiting dan in de drie symfonische gedichten die de zogenaamde Romeinse Trilogie vormen. De Sinfonia Drammatica uit 1914 toont nog de blijvende invloed van Brahms en Franck. Maar slechts een jaar later schudde hij eindelijk de ketenen van de romantiek van zich af en bood hij een eerste glimp van het opmerkelijke kleurgebruik dat al snel het kenmerk van zijn orkestcomposities zou worden

Misschien wel het bekendste deel van de trilogie is gewijd aan de Zwitserse den, een iconische boom die een kenmerkend kenmerk van de stad was - en nog steeds is. Niet toevallig, toen Respighi in 1930 zijn droomhuis op Monte Mario betrok, noemde hij het "Villa i Pini". Volgens zijn vrouw Elsa hielpen de hoge pijnbomen die de tuin van de villa beschaduwden hem de gemoedsrust te vinden waar hij al zijn hele leven naar op zoek was.
