Piano Concerto No.2/Handel Variations

Het tweede album in Lars Vogt's Johannes Brahms Concert Serie met de Royal Northern Sinfonia bevat Brahms' 2e Pianoconcert gecombineerd met een solo pianowerk, de Händel Variaties op. 24, door de componist opgedragen aan Clara Schumann.

Brahms' Pianoconcert nr. 2 is een romantisch vierdelig concert dat twee decennia na zijn voorganger werd geschreven en een van de hoekstenen van het concertrepertoire vormt. Dit opmerkelijke werk, met een groot aantal prachtige solopassages en een duur van meer dan 45 minuten, is sinds de première in 1881 door talloze pianisten vertolkt. Op dit album dirigeert Vogt het concert vanaf de piano.

De Variaties en Fuga op een Thema van Händel op. 24 voor piano solo werd geschreven door de jonge componist in zijn late twintiger jaren. Dit werk, dat enkele technisch veeleisende passages voor de pianisten bevat, toont Brahms' grote belangstelling voor de werken van de grote barokke meesters, die als inspiratiebron dienden voor het werk van de componist. Deze reeks van 25 variaties en een fuga toont Brahms als een grote opvolger van de traditie van pianovariaties die door Mozart en Beethoven werd geïllustreerd.
