Korngolds grootste kritische successen waren op het gebied van de opera en met zijn filmmuziek. De vroege toneelmuziek weerspiegelt beide elementen, deelt de theatrale bravoure van de opera en loopt vooruit op zijn eigen latere filmische technieken. De muziek voor de Weense productie van Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing uit 1920, hier integraal te horen, is expressief en dramatisch. The Vampire, een psychologische studie van begeerte, verleiding en hebzucht, is zelden te horen, maar blijft een sterk voorbeeld van Korngolds flair voor directe karakterisering.
