A Mass of Life

Frederick Delius, die altijd een liefhebber was van de poëtische geschriften van Friedrich Nietzsche, componeerde "A Mass of Life" op het hoogtepunt van zijn compositorische carrière. In dit werk zette hij passages uit "Also sprach Zarathustra" op muziek in orkestrale texturen die van een expressieve diepte en betoverende schoonheid zijn. In de laatste jaren van zijn leven componeerde Delius "Prelude en Idyll", met als basis een opera die hij vele jaren eerder had opgeschreven. Aanvankelijk nog gedomineerd door verlangen en wraak, benadrukt Delius in het latere verloop van het verhaal de vergankelijkheid van leven en liefde.
