Bottesini, whose music is little played in international concert halls, was a colourful composer, about whom many an anecdote could be told. There can be little doubt that he was born with a string instrument in his hands. He studied violin and viola but chose for the double bass at age thirteen. He shone as a soloist, led the double bass section in opera orchestras, he conducted ánd he composed.

Stotijn received his first lessons at the age of eight and won his first prizes at the Princess Christina Competition and the Foundation of Youth Musical Talent, followed by numerous master classes and courses. Many solo appearances at home and abroad were soon to follow. Rick is currently leader of the double basses in the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the Swedish Radio Orchestra. He is also guest leader of orchestras including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Rundfunk Sinfonie Orchester Berlin and the London Symphony Orchestra.

"Sinds Giovanni Bottesini (1821-1889) zich met de contrabas is gaan bemoeien, werd de brombeer van het symfonieorkest ook solist. Tenminste: in de handen van de Italiaanse componist, dirigent en strijker Bottesini zelf. Hij ontwikkelde nieuwe speeltechnieken, beheerste het hoogste register tot in de puntjes en schreef prachtige, meeslepende romantische werken waarin hij het begrip belcanto zonder problemen vertaalde naar deze basso profundo onder de strijkinstrumenten. Het probleem van deze ‘Paganini van de contrabas’ was dat hij weinig navolging kreeg. Het instrument verdween daarom na Bottesini’s dood weer goeddeels naar de krochten van het orkest. Waarschijnlijk zit de Italiaan nu lachend op een wolk, want er gloort hoop voor de contrabas. De nieuwe Bottesini luistert naar de Hollandse naam Rick Stotijn. En met deze cd, uiteraard geheel gewijd aan het werk van Bottesini, geeft hij zijn visitekaartje af. Meteen al het Grand Duo Concertant met violiste Liza Ferschtman op viool is een goede reden om de contrabas als solo-instrument te omarmen. En na de liederen met Stotijns zus, de mezzosopraan Christianne, is het een voldongen feit: er is geen mooier solo-instrument dan de contrabas van Rick Stotijn."
