Fort Smith Symphony, John Jeter

Florence Price werd geboren in Little Rock, Arkansas, en studeerde aan het New England Conservatory, maar pas in Chicago beschreef zij haar compositorische loopbaan. Het concert in 1933 waarbij haar Symfonie nr. 1 in e mineur in première ging, was de eerste keer dat een groot Amerikaans orkest een stuk uitvoerde dat was geschreven door een Afro-Amerikaanse vrouw. Onder invloed van Dvorak en Coleridge-Taylor speelden ze negroïde spirituals en folksy muziek, vol teksten en syncopen. Symfonie nr. 4 in d mineur demonstreert haar strakke orkestratie, scherp gevoel voor orkestrale kleur, Ellingtoniaanse 'junglestijl'-taal en voorliefde voor de' Juba'-dans.
