Giacomo Meyerbeer, the master of Parisian grand opéra, was hugely successful in his time and a major influence on Verdi and Wagner. His music has fascinated Diana Damrau since her student days. With her brilliant coloratura, lyricism and dramatic power, the soprano rises triumphantly to the vocal and expressive challenges of arias from 10 of his operas, singing in French, Italian and German. Two of the arias receive their world premiere recording with this album. The idea of a Meyerbeer album has been close to Diana Damrau’s heart since she first recorded for Erato back in 2006. She became fascinated by the composer’s music as a student in Würzburg, when she was invited to perform his cantata Gli amori di Teolinda. “I immersed myself in Meyerbeer’s world,” she explains, “and was excited by his multifaceted writing for the voice, by his orchestral colours, his theatrical instincts, the powerful and varied way in which he expresses emotion, his splendid melodies and, last but not least, his ability to capture precisely the right ‘national style’. If you compare his Italian, German and French works, it is like listening to three different composers.”

"Wie van opera houdt en bijna anderhalf uur lang in goed gezelschap wil zijn, die kan deze nieuwe cd aanschaffen van de Duitse stersopraan Diana Damrau. Het goede gezelschap slaat zowel op deze briljante lyrische coloratuursopraan als op het orkest van de opera van Lyon als op Giacomo Meyerbeer zelf.

Meyerbeer was een Duitser van geboorte, kreeg een opleiding in Italië en werd in de armen gesloten door Frankrijk. Hij was de grootmeester van de “grand opéra”, vandaar de titel van deze cd. Maar denk daarbij niet dat de opname met alleen maar werk van Meyerbeer u ook maar een minuut zal vervelen: daarvoor is de variatie in expressie, orkestrale kleuren en stijlen te groot. Meyerbeer slaagde erin kenmerken van het Italiaanse belcanto, Duitse vormelijkheid en Frans sentiment te verenigen in zijn opera’s. In de loop van de 20e eeuw kwam er een herwaardering voor deze componist en grote operahuizen zijn toe aan een revival van werken zoals Les Huguenots of Robert le Diable.

Diana Damrau maakt met deze opname een oude droom waar en dient dit repertoire met verve. Er is niks aan te merken op haar gedoseerde expressiviteit, feilloze techniek en dictie.
