Schubert: Symphonies, Vol. 1:

Following a highly successful series ‘Mendelssohn in Birmingham’, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with their former Chief Conductor Edward Gardner here presents the first volume in a new surround-sound series: Schubert Symphonies. This first volume comprises of three symphonies spanning across Schubert’s life. His Symphony No. 3 (1815), with its extensive and evolving slow introduction is followed by the culminating distillation of Schubertian classicism that is his ‘little’ Symphony No. 5 (1816). Scored for chamber orchestra, it tells of an influence of Mozart, for whom Schubert seemed to have felt a special affinity with around this time. Completing the album is Schubert’s much more intense (with a turbulent first movement and serene second) Symphony No. 8 “unfinished” (1822), of which only the first two movements and a skeleton sketch of a third Scherzo movement were completed.

"Dirigent Edward Gardner leidt het City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in drie Symfonieën van Franz Schubert. Deze cd is de eerste in een serie van alle symfonieën van Schubert die Gardner samen met dat orkest gaat opnemen. Het is in dat opzicht dus een vervolg van zijn vorige succesvolle serie met het City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra waarin de muziek van Mendelssohn centraal stond.

En net als bij die serie is het heerlijk luisteren. Deze trapt af met Schuberts Derde symfonie dat met een prachtig langzame introductie begint. Daarna de Vijfde symfonie waarin Schubert zich duidelijk door W. A. Mozart heeft laten inspireren. Tot slot de symfonie die we kennen als nr. 8. Die heeft Schubert onvoltooid achtergelaten. Waarom? Dat is nooit duidelijk geworden. De eerste twee delen van het werk zijn compleet, en van het derde deel bestaat slechts een klein begin. Maar de twee complete delen van de symfonie – waarvan het eerste pijnlijk gekweld en het tweede sereen – zijn een uniek en ontroerend statement op zichzelf."
