Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (piano)

Jean-Efflam Bavouzet bereikt het hoogtepunt van zijn meermaals bekroonde serie complete werken voor piano van Debussy, met een album met solo-pianotranscripties van drie balletten uit dezelfde periode.

Sir Charles Stanford onderwierp alle muziek aan wat hij een 'pianotest' noemde: als het niet bestand was tegen het spelen op de piano, dan was het niet serieus te nemen. In het geval van Debussy gingen alle partituren van de Franse componist door een notatiefase die, als ze niet specifiek voor piano was ontworpen, een redelijk nauwkeurige uitvoering op dat instrument kon geven. Bij balletten moest de choreograaf uiteraard de dansers repeteren onder begeleiding van een pianopartituur die overeenkwam met de ritmes en structuur van het uiteindelijke orkestrale product. De drie pianoversies die hier zijn opgenomen, waren daarom nauw verbonden met zowel het compositie- als het productieproces.
