Howard Shelley (piano/conductor) & Sinfonieorchester St Gallen

The ?gures of Auguste Dupont and Peter Benoit may be little known outside their native Belgium, yet both enjoyed pianistic and pedagogical success in their lifetimes. Benoit’s symphonic poem is a piano concerto in all but name, ending with a spiritedly Mephistophelean ‘fantastical hunt’.

Benoit, Peter:
Symphonic poem for piano and orchestra, Op 43

Dupont, A:
Piano Concerto No 3 in F minor, Op 49

"Dupont’s Third Concerto (1870s, revised – probably for publication by Schott in 1880) is well-written and conventional, opening with a dark and troubled Allegro moderato, succeeded by a pallid Adagio (in D-flat) with delicate passages for the pianist and solo strings; the dance-like final Vivace alternates between the tonic of F minor and D-flat. Shelley and the St Gallen Orchestra perform it with relish."
International Piano - February 2020

"Two pleasant, if unremarkable, works. Soloist Howard Shelley adds plenty of sparkle, mind."
BBC Music Magazine - March 2020 ****

"One can only marvel at Howard Shelley’s industry in the triple role of musical archaeologist, conductor and pianist. It is not just the fluency, power and precision of his playing that elevates both scores but the little understated moments when he pulls back to let the music breathe with exquisitely sensitive phrasing."
Gramophone Magazine - March 2020
