"De Engelse componist Sir John Tavener (1944-2012) heeft zich altijd weinig aangetrokken van hedendaagse s romingen. Zijn habitat was de religie, de kerk, zowel in zijn instrumentale als in zijn vele koorwerken. En als we het over de kerk hebben, hebben we het vooral over de Winchester Cathedral. Hij kwam er graag en hij schreef diverse werken voor het Winchester Cathedral Choir. Al in 1987 componeerde hij God is with us voor tenor en koor. Eerder schreef hij Hymn to the Mother of God en nog in 2011 ging zijn They are all gone into the world of light bij het koor in première. Deze composities zijn met andere meesterlijke en direct aansprekende koorwerken verenigd op de cd Angels met het Winchester Cathedral Choir in een stralende hoofdrol. En het mag dan religieuze muziek zijn, elke koorliefhebber smelt bij deze klanken. Het is alsof de aloude harmonie der sferen die Plato al naar voren bracht hier fysiek tot klinken komt en het hele firmament laat zingen van schoonheid, barmhartigheid en liefde. Indrukwekkend."
