Víkingur Ólafsson (piano)

De IJslandse pianist Víkingur Ólafsson heeft een diepgaande impact gemaakt met zijn opmerkelijke combinatie van muzikaal vakmanschap op het hoogste niveau en visionaire programma's. Zijn opnames voor Deutsche Grammophon – Philip Glass Piano Works (2017), Johann Sebastian Bach (2018), Debussy Rameau (2020), Mozart & Contemporaries (2021) en From Afar (2022) – hebben tot de publieke en kritische verbeelding gesproken. In oktober 2023 brengt Ólafsson zijn verwachte nieuwe album uit op Deutsche Grammophon van J.S. Bachs Goldbergvariaties. Ólafsson heeft zijn hele seizoen 2023-2024 gewijd aan een Goldberg Variations-wereldtournee, waarbij hij het werk het hele jaar door op zes continenten uitvoerde. Hij brengt het meesterwerk van Bach naar grote concertzalen, waaronder het Londense Southbank Centre, New York's Carnegie Hall, Wiener Konzerthaus, Philharmonie de Paris, Tokyo's Suntory Hall, Harpa Concert Hall, Sydney Opera House, Walt Disney Hall, Sala São Paulo, Shanghai Symphony Hall, Tonhalle Zürich, Philharmonie Berlijn, Mupa Boedapest, KKL Luzern en Alte Oper Frankfurt, om er maar een paar te noemen.

Ólafsson’s phrasing is so graceful, his articulation playful yet exact. The effect is utterly beguiling...If any quality dominates the interpretation of this keyboard masterwork, I’d say it was Ólafsson’s highlighting of Bach’s good humour as the theme is ingeniously twisted this way and that. This really is a refreshing release.
