In maart van dit jaar dirigeerde Thomas Adès, een van de meest geprezen en meest uitgevoerde hedendaagse componisten van onze tijd, het Boston Symphony Orchestra en speelde Kirill Gerstein de wereldpremière van zijn Concerto voor piano en orkest. In opdracht van de BSO voor Kirill Gerstein wordt het werk nu al onderdeel van het concertrepertoire wereldwijd.
Deze live-opname van wat een verrukkelijke viering van hedendaagse muziek bleek te zijn, en die enthousiaste reacties kreeg van zowel publiek als critici, wordt op het album gecombineerd met Adès’ werk Totentanz uit 2013.
Totentanz brengt solisten van bariton (Mark Stone) en mezzosopraan (Christianne Stotijn) samen met een (zeer) groot orkest, waardoor een dialoog ontstaat tussen een charismatische en vrolijk macabere Magere Hein en de processie van zijn vele slachtoffers, van paus tot meisje en kind .
