Alfred Schnittke: CHOIR CONCERTO, THREE SACRED HYMNS / Arvo Part: SEVEN MAGNIFICAT-ANTIPHONS

Toen Alfred Schnittke en Arvo Pärt in de jaren zeventig het orthodoxe geloof omarmden, werden de orthodoxe koortradities steeds belangrijker in hun werk, maar beide componisten keken ook naar de muziek van de westerse kerk. Schnittke's "Three Spiritual Hymns" is gebaseerd op drie gebeden van de Westerse Kerk en vertaalt dit in Orthodox gezang. Zijn Koorconcert daarentegen put uit de 19e eeuwse Russische koormuziek en uit de traditie van grootschalige concertwerken gebaseerd op orthodoxe koormuziek.

De teksten van de middeleeuwse Armeense dichter Gregorius van Nareka werden gekenmerkt door een humanistisch individualisme, waarbij de dichter zijn gevoelens direct uitdrukte en vaak in de eerste persoon schreef. In het geval van Pärt leidde zijn gedetailleerde studie van het orthodoxe gezang ertoe dat hij zijn zogenaamde "Tintinnabuli" compositiesysteem ontwikkelde als een uitbreiding van de harmonische gebruiken van de orthodoxe koormuziek. Hij schreef zijn zeven Magnificat-antifonen in 1988, waarbij hij de tintinnabuli-techniek toepaste op teksten uit de katholieke liturgie in het Duits - een opvallende Oost-West hybride.

Het Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir en Kaspars Putnins hebben al eerder religieuze werken van Schnittke en Pärt gecombineerd. Hun eerdere release op BIS leverde hen een prestigieuze Gramophone Award op in de categorie koormuziek.
