Het werk aan dit liederenrecital begon voor de Britse sopraan Ruby Hughes en haar vaste liedbegeleider Joseph Middleton in 2018 met de première van Helen Grimes' "Bright Travellers". De componist zette vijf gedichten op muziek die handelen over zwangerschap en het moederschap. Daarna volgde de selectie van andere liederencycli die bij dit thematische complex passen en het ook vanuit geheel andere aspecten belichten. Het slot is Mahlers Kindertotenlieder, gebaseerd op de ontroerende en schrijnende gedichten van Friedrich Rückert.
