Martinu: VIOLIN CONCERTOS 1 & 2 / Bartok: SOLO SONATA

Op deze CD speelt Frank Peter Zimmermann, een van de meest gewaardeerde violisten van dit moment, werken van twee Midden-Europese componisten die ook een voorbeeld zijn van verschillende stromingen in de klassieke muziek in de periode 1920-1950. Hoewel het pas in 1973 voor het eerst werd uitgevoerd, was Bohuslav Martinu's Vioolconcert nr. 1 40 jaar eerder gecomponeerd in het neoklassieke idioom dat werd verdedigd door Stravinsky. Het Tweede Vioolconcert van de componist (1943) daarentegen is meer lyrisch geschreven, deels passend bij de speelstijl van Mischa Elman, de violist die het bestelde. In beide werken wordt Zimmermann begeleid door Bamberger Symphoniker onder leiding van Jakub Hrusa, de chef-dirigent van het orkest, een van de toonaangevende Martinu-dirigenten van vandaag. De CD sluit af met een centraal werk in de twintigste-eeuwse literatuur voor viool solo, Béla Bartóks Sonate voor viool solo. Gecomponeerd in 1944, slechts een jaar voor de dood van Bartók, is het een zeer persoonlijk statement dat de algehele lay-out van Bachs solovioolsonates combineert met Hongaarse volkstraditie, met resultaten die zowel fascinerend zijn voor de luisteraar als uitdagend voor de uitvoerder.
