Symphony NO. 12

In meer dan één opzicht is de Twaalfde Symfonie een uitzondering in Allan Petterssons produktie. Toen hij ermee instemde een werk te componeren voor de 500e verjaardag van de Universiteit van Uppsala, was dat een van de weinige opdrachten die hij ooit had aanvaard. En wat meer is, nu - nadat hij de afgelopen 30 jaar louter orkestpartituren had geschreven - besloot hij een koor en tekst op te nemen.

Pablo Neruda had in 1971 de Nobelprijs voor Literatuur gewonnen, en Pettersson bracht hulde aan het "oprechte medeleven van de dichter met de verschoppelingen van de maatschappij". Voor zijn nieuwe werk koos hij negen gedichten uit de omvangrijke bundel "Canto General". (Terwijl Pettersson de symfonie componeerde, stierf Neruda tijdens de tumultueuze nasleep van de militaire staatsgreep in Chili op 11 september 1973) De gedichten gaan over een incident in Santiago de Chile in 1946, toen zes demonstranten tijdens een arbeidersopstand door de politie werden gedood. Pettersson, die uit een arbeidersgezin komt, gaf het volgende commentaar: "Mijn hart was en is bij de armen in Chili, net als bij de arbeidersklasse in de Derde Wereld waar ik ben opgegroeid."

Hoewel de 12e Symfonie zowel tekst als zang bevat, was het nooit de bedoeling dat het iets anders dan een echte "Pettersson Symfonie" zou worden - zoals zovele van zijn voorgangers bestaat zij uit één deel. De koorpartijen zijn zeer veeleisend - het koor zingt bijna zonder onderbreking en vaak zeer krachtig en in moeilijke registers. Het Zweeds Radiokoor en het Eric Ericson Kamerkoor, twee van de beste koren van Zweden, hebben hun krachten gebundeld voor deze opname, samen met het Norrköping Symfonie Orkest en Christian Lindberg voor de nieuwe aflevering van de veelgeprezen Pettersson cyclus van dit team.

In more ways than one, the Twelfth Symphony forms an exception in Allan Pettersson’s output. When he agreed to compose a work for the 500th anniversary of Uppsala University, it was one of the few commissions that he ever accepted. And what’s more, he now – after having written purely orchestral scores for the past 30 years – decided to incorporate a choir and a text. Pablo Neruda had received the Nobel Prize in 1971, and acknowledging the poet’s ‘deeply felt compassion for the outcasts of society’, Pettersson selected nine poems from the huge collection Canto general for his new work. The poems deal with an incident in Santiago de Chile in 1946 when six demonstrators were killed by the police during a workers’ manifestation. Pettersson, who came from a working-class background, commented on the subject matter: ‘My heart was, and is, with the poor of Chile, so like the worker in the ‘third world’ in which I grew up.’ But even though Symphony No. 12 includes both text and singing, it was never a question of it turning into anything other than a true ‘Pettersson symphony’ – like so many of its predecessors it is in one movement, and the composer considered the words to be ‘part of a purely symphonic context’. The Swedish Radio Choir and Eric Ericson Chamber Choir, two of Sweden’s finest choirs, have combined their forces for this recording and join the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra and Christian Lindberg on the latest instalment in the team’s acclaimed Pettersson cycle.
