Brahms kreeg als tiener niet alleen professionele pianolessen, zodat hij al snel als pianist kon optreden, maar leerde ook cello en hoorn spelen.
Zijn beschermheer Robert Schumann had een vergelijkbare instrumentale opleiding genoten met piano-, cello- en dwarsfluitlessen. Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat we in Brahms' kamermuziekwerk ook twee cellosonates aantreffen en dat de cello samen met de viool als solist optreedt in zijn dubbelconcert.
Schumann van zijn kant schreef naast het beroemde soloconcert twee composities met piano voor de cello: de Fünf Stücke im Volkston en (kort voor zijn ziekte) vijf Romanzen, die helaas verdwenen zijn. Een logische keuze van werken voor dit album.
