Van alle mysteries rond Erik Satie en zijn muziek is Vexations waarschijnlijk het meest raadselachtige. Een "thema" in de bas met twee verschillende harmonisaties, 840 keer te spelen volgens een dubbelzinnige noot in de handtekening. Zo wordt het tenminste geïnterpreteerd sinds het eerste publieke optreden, dat meer dan 18 uur duurde en georganiseerd werd door John Cage in 1963. Toen Satie Vexations schreef is het onzeker, en hoewel er meestal van wordt uitgegaan dat het voor een klavierinstrument is geschreven, kan zelfs dat niet als zeker worden beschouwd. Er zijn geen uitvoeringen bekend tijdens het leven van de componist, en het één pagina tellende manuscript werd pas na de dood van Satie ontdekt. De vele vraagtekens rond het werk hebben er een cultklassieker van gemaakt, en live-optredens - door een enkele pianist of meerdere artiesten op hun beurt - zijn gebeurtenissen die nog steeds de aandacht trekken, ook al zitten maar weinig mensen in het publiek een volledige voorstelling uit. Als onderdeel van haar veelgeprezen Satie cyclus biedt Noriko Ogawa hier een consumeerbare versie (142 herhalingen in 80 minuten) van de "Vexation Experience" aan met een houding die waarschijnlijk de wenkbrauwen zal doen fronsen onder de puristen: "Satie's werk is een uitdaging voor de conventionele uitvoeringstraditie. Waarom daag je hem dan niet uit?

Of all the enigmas that surround Erik Satie and his music, Vexations is probably the most enigmatic. A ‘theme’ in the bass, with two different  harmonisations, to be played – according to an ambiguous note on the composer's autograph – 840 times. That is at least how it has been interpreted since the first public performance, which lasted more than 18 hours and was organized by the composer John Cage in 1963. When Satie wrote Vexations is uncertain, and although it is usually assumed to be intended for a keyboard instrument, that is also impossible to confirm. There are no known performances of it in the composer’s lifetime, and the single-page manuscript was only discovered after Satie’s death. The many question marks surrounding the work have made it a cult classic, and live performances – by a single pianist or several performers taking turns – are events that still attract attention, even if only a few in the audience sit out a complete performance.
