Ronald Brautigam (fortepiano)

In maart 1783 kon men in Cramer's Magazin der Musik lezen over een zekere "Louis van Betthoven, een jongen van veelbelovend talent", wiens eerste werk werd aangekondigd als "Negen Variaties voor piano, door hem geschreven op een mars, en gepubliceerd te Mannheim". Dit waren de "Dressler Variaties" waarmee Brautigam zijn opname begint. Ze vormden niet alleen het begin van een glansrijke carrière, maar ook het begin van Beethovens levenslange omgang met en liefde voor de variatievorm, die veertig jaar later zijn hoogtepunt bereikte in de monumentale "Diabelli-variaties". Maar zo ver komt Brautigam niet met deze set. Voor de vroege variaties die hier zijn opgenomen, heeft hij gekozen voor een Walter & Sohn fortepiano, een replica van een instrument dat rond 1805 werd gebouwd.

Ronald Brautigam continues his traversal of Beethoven’s complete works for solo piano with a group of early variations. The Dressler Variations were Beethoven’s first published work and started a forty-year association with the variation form. The Dressler Variations are certainly less heavy-weight than his later works, but the so-called Venni Amore Variations, WoO 65 point forward to a much later period in Beethoven's œuvre. In this series, Ronald Brautigam has previously recorded early sonatas and sonatinas from the same period as the present works. As on the previous instalment in the series, Brautigam has chosen to perform these early variations on a fortepiano after a Walter & Sohn instrument from c.1805.
