"Thema en Variaties" is een vorm die Beethoven zijn hele leven begeleidde. Zijn eerste pogingen in het genre deed hij als jongen in Bonn; de laatste werken voltooide hij ruim veertig jaar later. Beethovens compositorische ontwikkeling kan dus goed bestudeerd worden in deze groep werken. Aan het einde van de 18e eeuw dienden variaties vooral als amusement; populaire thema's werden als basis genomen. Beethoven volgde aanvankelijk deze marketingstrategie, maar veranderde daarna de regels van het spel op een voor hem typische manier. Aflevering 1 van in totaal 4 SACD's met variatiewerken biedt eerst vroege werken, geschreven tussen 1796 en 1802, de tijd waarin Beethoven zich vestigde als een vooraanstaand jong componist en opvolger van Haydn en Mozart. In 1802 raakte hij in een diepe depressie toen zijn beginnende doofheid duidelijk werd. Na de crisis schreef hij de "Eroica-variaties", waarin hij radicaal breekt met de traditionele variatietraditie.

Following on his acclaimed recordings of Beethoven’s sonatas, sonatinas and bagatelles, Ronald Brautigam here presents the first disc of four with variations, comprising works composed between 1796 and 1802. The ‘Eroica variations’ Op.35 is on a much larger scale than any of the variations he had written before, and Beethoven himself described it as a work in ‘a wholly new style’.

Brautigam has used two different fortepianos on this recording: the earlier works are played on an instrument by Paul McNulty after Walter & Sohn c.1805, while the Op.35 set is performed on another by the same maker, after Conrad Graf c.1819.
