Clarinet concertos & quintet

Net als Mozart met Anton Stadler en later Brahms met zijn Richard Mühlfeld, kon ook Carl Maria von Weber een beroep doen op een uitzonderlijke klarinettist: Heinrich Baermann, die de inspiratiebron vormde voor alle werken op deze cd. Hoewel ze werden geschreven voordat Weber Der Freischütz had gecomponeerd, de opera die van hem een onmiddellijke ster in de vroeg-romantische muziek maakte, behoren ze nu tot zijn meest gespeelde werken. Het Concertino en de twee Concerto's werden alle gecomponeerd in 1811, bijna in een roes die getuigt van de inspiratie die Weber moet hebben ervaren toen hij Baermann voor het eerst hoorde. Het is ook hoorbaar in de muziek, die de technische mogelijkheden van het instrument laat zien en de rijkdom aan kleuren, terwijl het instrument wordt voorzien van aangrijpende momenten in aria-achtige langzame delen en virtuoze en levendige finales. Om deze werken uit te voeren is een allround musicus nodig: iemand als Baermann - of als Martin Fröst! Met zijn laatste uitgave op BIS - kamerwerken van Brahms (BIS 1353) - veroverde Fröst de harten en oren van zowel publiek als recensenten, zoals blijkt uit een aantal onderscheidingen en uit het volgende citaat: "Zijn zachte, gelijkmatige toon is verrukkelijk verleidelijk, en hij kan de klank naar believen verduisteren of verlichten, van fluwelen warmte met een gevoelig toegepast vibrato, tot een stijgende helderheid die nooit luider gaat dan lieflijk ... Ik zou meer kunnen schrijven, maar als u me wilt excuseren, ik zou liever helemaal opnieuw verleid willen worden." (Andrew McGregor, BBC Radio 3: CD Review). Eerder veroorzaakte Fröst's opname van Mozart's Concerto en Quintet (BIS 1263) soortgelijke reacties, bijvoorbeeld in International Record Review: "Misschien bestaan er beter opgenomen uitvoeringen van deze torenhoge meesterwerken, maar ik heb ze nog nooit gehoord. In hun technische bekwaamheid, stijlbewustzijn en breed, maar nooit overdreven emotioneel bereik, schitteren ze als grote prestaties"

"Martin Fröst's style of playing is well suited to Weber: he has a clear, fresh tone and fingers undefeated by even the most sensational of the applause music that ends some of these works. He is not afraid of considerable tempo variations within a movement, as Weber is on record as having wanted. This all contributes to a charming, eloquent performance of the Concertino. However, the F minor Concerto (No 1) does not need its opening Allegro to be taken quite so fast for it to make its points, and the finale, here sounding like a brisk allegro verging on presto, is actually marked Allegretto, which gives the music more space and freedom. The slow movements of both concertos are played simply, without affectation, and Fröst remembers that the alla polacca of the finale of No 2 is a dance. He takes a bright lead in the Quintet; it is played here as a concerto with full strings, which is a pity but, given the quatuor concertant nature of the work, not as disastrous as it would be with Mozart. This is a fresh, amiable performance that responds to the music's varied nature. Fröst also plays some cadenzas of his own, rejecting those which were later added by Carl Baermann, son of the much-admired dedicatee of the works, Heinrich Baermann. He further adds a few flourishes: unnecessarily, but there is no need to be too purist here. These are attractive, exhilarating performances, clearly recorded so as to do justice to the orchestral effects which were always part of Weber's exuberant invention."
