PLAYS KAIKHOSRU SORABJI: 100 TRANSCENDETAL STUDIES

De 100 Transcendentale Studies van Kaikhosru Sorabji, gecomponeerd tussen 1940 en 1944, vormen verreweg de grootste verzameling concert etudes in het bekende repertoire, in totaal meer dan acht uur. Op vijf eerdere CD's heeft de Zweedse pianist (en neurowetenschapper) Fredrik Ullén de eerste 83 etudes aan een breder publiek voorgesteld, waarvan het overgrote deel voor het eerst op CD is verschenen. Nu, 15 jaar na de uitgave van de eerste set, komt de laatste editie, een 2-CD set met de laatste 17 studies.

In zijn inleiding beschrijft Ullén de ervaring van het leren en interpreteren van de verzameling: "Van de Fis-klein van Studie 1 tot het Fis-klein akkoord aan het eind van Studie 100: het doorkruisen van Sorabji's Transcendentale Studies was zoiets als het vliegen van een komeet op een lange excentrische baan door de pianistische ruimte en uiteindelijk terugkeren naar Moeder Aarde." De meeste etudes zijn typische concert etudes in die zin dat zij in wezen één enkel technisch of structureel idee exploreren. Maar vooral tegen het einde van de cyclus maakte Sorabji stukken op een veel grotere schaal, een tendens die culmineert in de laatste twee etudes.

Quasi-Fantasie (nr. 99) is een enorm uitgebreide uitwerking van J. S. Bachs Chromatische Fantasie, gevolgd door de bijna een uur durende coda-finale, een kwintupelfuga van een verbazingwekkende complexiteit. Naast programmatoelichting door Fredrik Ullén bevat het CD-boekje teksten van Kenneth Derus en Alistair Hinton, die beiden de componist hebben gekend.

By far the largest collection of concert études in the known repertoire, Kaikhosru Sorabji’s set of 100 Transcendental Studies, composed between 1940 and 1944, has a total duration of more than eight hours. On five previous recordings, the Swedish pianist (and neuroscientist) Fredrik Ullén has introduced the first 83 études to a wider audience, the large majority of them appearing on disc for the first time. Now, 15 years after the release of the first volume comes the final instalment, a 2-disc set with the last 17 studies. In his own liner notes, Ullén describes the experience of learning and recording the collection: ‘From the F sharp minor of Study 1 to the F sharp minor chord concluding Study 100: traversing Sorabji’s Transcendental Studies has been somewhat like joining a comet following a long eccentric orbit through pianistic outer space, and finally returning back to mother earth.’ Most of the studies are typical concert études in the sense that they essentially explore a single technical or structural idea. But especially towards the end of the cycle Sorabji includes pieces that are on a much larger scale, a tendency that culminates with the two final études. Besides the programme notes by Fredrik Ullén, the CD booklet includes texts by Kenneth Derus and Alistair Hinton who both knew the composer.
