Harnoncourt's revolutionaire Schubert uit Graz

Nikolaus Harnoncourt was zijn hele leven nauw verbonden met het Kamerorkest van Europa. Het orkest is ontstaan uit vroegere muzikanten van het Jeugdorkest van de Europese Gemeenschap en heeft zich van meet af aan ingezet voor de pan-Europese gedachte. Harnoncourt nam zijn bekroonde Beethoven symfonie cyclus op met het orkest.

In juli 1988 voerde Harnoncourt met het COE een spectaculaire Schubert-cyclus uit op het door hem opgerichte Styriarte Festival in Graz, die een revolutie teweeg moest brengen in de tot dan toe gangbare perceptie van de symfonieën, met name de vroege symfonieën van Schubert. De concerten werden destijds opgenomen door de ORF en worden nu voor het eerst uitgebracht: Harnoncourt blijft zich een ideale vertolker van Schuberts muziek tonen. Een cyclus die niets van zijn revolutionaire explosieve kracht heeft verloren. Een echte schat in het geluidsarchief is hier opgegraven. Dit is een van de beste complete opnamen van deze werken.
