Naast de grote koorwerken zoals de Mis in B-klein, de Johannes-Passion en de Matthäus-Passion, en de motetten a capella, vormen de meer dan 200 overgeleverde cantates van Johann Sebastian Bach het middelpunt van zijn geestelijke koor- en orkestmuziek. Geschreven in een bijna wekelijkse cyclus voor elke zondag van het kerkelijk jaar, is hun muzikale verscheidenheid en schoonheid verbazingwekkend. Onder de cantates zijn er drie geschreven voor een solobassist, waaraan Michael Volle regelmatig zijn warme en krachtige stem leent tijdens concerten in heel Europa. In december 2016 nam hij ze op in de Christuskirche Berlijn, samen met de Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, een van 's werelds toonaangevende orkesten gespecialiseerd in historische uitvoeringen.
