Tijdens de lange periode waarin Bach, Mozart en Beethoven de klassieke muzikale canon van West-Europa creëerden, weerklonken de liederen van Afrikaanse slaven in de kolonies en plantages aan de andere kant van de Atlantische Oceaan, die hun pijn en verlangen, maar ook vreugde en verlangen naar vrijheid uitten. De Amerikaanse countertenor Reginald Mobley en de Franse pianist Baptiste Trotignon hebben hun buitengewone talent en gevoeligheid gecombineerd om hulde te brengen aan deze spirituals en de muziek van zwarte componisten.
