De wieg van de moderniteit stond in de Weense salons en de koffiehuizen die werden bevolkt door kunstenaars en intellectuelen van het fin de siècle. Voor haar nieuwe CD op ALPHA heeft de onvergelijkbare Barabara Hannigan liederen gekozen van Weense componisten uit deze periode. Met haar legendarische dramatische flair maakt de zangeres van de liedjes die ze ten gehore brengt kleine scènes, zelfs mini-opera's.
