Na haar veelgeprezen volledige opname van Beethovens pianosonates, keert Mari Kodama terug met een programma bestaande uit Beethoven strijkkwartetten getranscribeerd voor piano door Saint-Saëns, Mussorgsky en Balakirev, evenals Beethovens variaties op de finale van Mozarts Klarinetkwintet. De meeste stukken worden voor het eerst opgenomen. Kaleidoscope is ontworpen als een eerbetoon, waarbij Beethoven wordt beschouwd en ervaren door de lens van andere grote componisten. Mari Kodama is een van de meest buitengewone pianisten van onze tijd en heeft een indrukwekkende PENTATONE-discografie, met Beethovens complete pianosonates (2003-2014), pianoconcerten van Loewe en Chopin (2003), Tchaikovsky Ballet Suites for Piano Duo (2016) , De Falla's Nights in the Gardens of Spain (2017) en Martinu's Concert for Two Pianos (2018).

"The Saint-Saens Allegretto (from Op. 59 No. 1) comes over with a light and velvet touch and not a trace of mannerism…Most successful are Musorgsky’s deft arrangements of movements from the F major Quartet, Op. 135: the Vivace feels entirely natural on a piano, and the Lento assai exudes a grave beauty, with occasional hints of the ghost of the original work. Beethoven’s little variations on Mozart’s theme reflect the composer at his most exuberant and inventive.
