Als uit een andere wereld

Op zijn debuutalbum op Pentatone vertolkt Francesco Piemontesi Schuberts laatste drie pianosonates (D. 958-D. 960). Pas na jaren van intensieve studie van deze buitengewone werken waagde de Zwitserse pianist zich in de opnamestudio. De sonates fascineren pianisten en luisteraars wereldwijd en behoren waarschijnlijk tot de meest intense voorbeelden van "existentiële muziek" die ooit voor de piano zijn geschreven: Ze worden gekenmerkt door een ongelooflijke schoonheid, diepe droefheid, een onbedwingbare levenslust en tegelijkertijd een gevoel van dood. Hoewel Schubert amper 30 jaar oud was toen hij ze componeerde, onthullen deze werken de buitenwereldse en afstandelijke aard van wat vaak wordt omschreven als een soort samenvattende, retrospectieve "late stijl".

Francesco Piemontesi heeft de afgelopen jaren een briljante reputatie opgebouwd als gevoelig en technisch foutloos vertolker. Zijn emotioneel intense en tegelijkertijd beheerste spel zijn ideale voorwaarden voor een Schubert die diep onder de huid kruipt.
